Pointlesss to oppose CAA in Meghalaya: BJP State President

Shillong, 15 Mar: The BJP state President, Rikman G Momin, said it is pointless to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 as the areas that fall under the Sixth Schedule, are exempted.

Momin, speaking to reporters on Friday, expressed gratitude to the central government, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for respecting the sentiments of the tribal people by exempting them from the CAA.

“In the original Citizenship Act of 1955, the Sixth Schedule areas were not exempt,” Momin said. “However, when the Act was amended in 2019 by the BJP government, the exemption was included. This demonstrates the BJP’s commitment to the well-being of tribals.”

However, when asked about areas in Meghalaya that are not included in the Sixth Schedule, BJP spokesperson MH Kharkrang stated that these areas are likely less than 1 square kilometer and residents would still need to apply for citizenship under the amended Act.
