Contenders for Shillong Parliamentary Seat in the Upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024

As the Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the date for the Lok Sabha elections, political parties and candidates across the country begin preparations.

We have two constituency in Meghalaya Tura and Shillong Constituency. Here, we will look at the list of candidates from the Shillong Parliamentary seat in Meghalaya who will contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The list of candidates includes:

List of candidates for Shillong Parlimentary seats

  1. Dr. AJ Ricky Syngkon – Voice of the People Party (VPP)
  2. Vincent H Pala – Incumbent MP from Indian National Congress (INC)
  3. Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh – State Cabinet Minister, National People’s Party (NPP)
  4. Robert Kharjarin – Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA)
  5. Prof. Lakhon Kma – Independent candidate

Dr. AJ Ricky Syngkon – Voice of the People Party (VPP)

Dr. Ricky Syngkon is the MP candidate for the Voice of the People Party and also serves as the General Secretary of the Voice of the People Party (VPP). Syngkon is a prominent professor, currently holding a teaching position at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in the Department of Commerce. He holds an M.A. in Economics, an M.Com, and a Ph.D., all earned from NEHU.

Syngkon lost the MLA election last year from the Umsning Assembly Constituency, being defeated by Celestine Lyngdoh of the Congress party.

Vincent H Pala – Incumbent MP from Indian National Congress (INC)

Vincent H Pala is the Incumbent MP from the Shillong Seat and also serves as the President of the Meghalaya Congress Committee (MPCC). Pala has been reelected as the MP of Shillong in 2009,2014 and 2019. He has served as the Minister of State, Minister of Water Resources (India) under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election from the Congress in the Shillong Parliamentary Seat.

Pala lost the MLA election last year to NPP candidate Santa Mary Shylla from the Sutnga Constituency.

Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh – State Cabinet Minister, National People’s Party (NPP)

Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh currently the MLA from East Shillong constituency and hold the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and Law of the Government of Meghalaya under the NPP led MDA-II government. Lyngdoh earned a Ph.D. from the North Eastern Hill University.

She will Contest the Lok Sabha Election from Shillong Parliamentary Seat from NPP tickets.

Robert Kharjarin – Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA)

Robert Kharjarin, the former President of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), is the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) candidate, representing an alliance between two regional parties: the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP). Kharjarin, an advocate and leader of NGOs, has decided to contest the Lok Sabha election under the RDA.

His candidacy symbolizes the convergence of regional interests and youth leadership within the political landscape of Meghalaya.

Prof. Lakhon Kma – Independent candidate

Prof. Lakhon Kma is a professor at North Eastern Hill University and an Independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha election from the Shillong Parliamentary Seat. He holds a professorial position in the Department of Biochemistry and serves as the President of the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA).

Prof. Kma obtained his B.Sc. (Honors in Zoology) from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong in 1997, followed by an M.Sc. in Biochemistry in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2004, both from NEHU, Shillong.

He contest as the Independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
